The Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, visited the Mercedes Benz plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where the director of the factory in Alava, Bernd Krottmayer, explained the progress of the works for the ambitious transformation of the factory, in which more than 1,000 million euros will be invested. In logistical terms, the future plant will cover an area of 800,000 square meters. Most of them (some 135,000 m2) will be used for Final Assembly, while 120,000 m2 will make up the Gross Assembly area.
“We are facing a huge challenge: a technological and cultural transformation that will be key to launching the new electric model from 2026. This change requires not only innovation, but also a solid training of our people and a strong commitment to sustainability. That is why the support of the Basque Government is essential to create an environment that fosters innovation and competitiveness. We are sincerely grateful for the support we have always received from you and, I am sure, will continue to receive. Today, more than ever, your support is fundamental”, emphasized the Director.
The Lehendakari, for his part, has highlighted the German multinational’s commitment to the Basque Country. “Investments such as those of Mercedes in this plant in Vitoria do not come alone to the Basque Country. The world’s leading companies choose where to settle”, he said. The German company, which has recently joined Robotekin as a partner, is the largest company in the Basque Country. It directly employs around 5,000 workers and some 30,000 people indirectly. It has 800 national suppliers and contributes 5.2% of the Basque Country’s GDP (33.7% in Alava), as well as being responsible for 14.12% of Basque exports (almost half – 45.16% – in Alava).
